Pilgrimage to Borobudur

Yutang Lin

In 2012 disciples Yong Lee and Ji Hu requested that I lead them on a pilgrimage to the Buddhist heritage site of Borobudur in Indonesia when I have time. In 2013 during my Dharma tour in Singapore some Buddhists there also suggested that I lead a group on a pilgrimage to this holy site. Since I was advanced in age and hence not keen to long trips, I did not seriously consider these suggestions.

In early morning on August 6, 2014 right before my flight from Beijing to Taipei, I saw in a dream the Chinese characters ″Lin Yu Nan Qing Chu Fa″, meaning ″Lin Yu(tang) south, please embark!″ Right then I comprehended that it was asking me to go on this pilgrimage trip. I told disciple Ji Hu who was accompanying me on the flight about this omen. She told disciple Kong Hui, and he right away offered to sponsor this pilgrimage.

In 2015 I still did not take this trip seriously. In March 2016 while arranging details of my Dharma tour to Asia I eventually agreed to repeated requests from disciples on this matter. Disciple Kong Hui, to avoid too much chores for the trip, arranged a light and easy 3-day trip for only me and 3 attending disciples. After airline tickets and hotel reservations have all been purchased, only much later on May 22 we learned from news articles that this year the Indonesian government has sponsored a huge celebration on Wesak for the very first time, and has invited Buddhist groups from all over the world to join the huge ceremony.

On June 1 this year we accomplished all Dharma activities in Malacca. The next day we flew from Kuala Lumpur to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. When we arrived the hotel it was already 10 o′clock at night.

8 am on June 3 we went on the pilgrimage to the holy site. As soon as we approached the holy site we immediately felt an enormous and mild power of blessing enwrapped us. I led disciples to advance upwards while practicing my daily practices. At each level we circumambulate clockwise once and then moved up to the next higher level; frequently we felt deeply moved to the verge of tears. Thus I realized that, as long as one makes sincere dedications for Dharma, the results will definitely leave permanent power of Bodhi (enlightenment) in the Dharmadhatu. Both on May 31 in Malacca and in the early morning on June 3 in Yogyakarta I received direct blessing from Dharmakaya leading to comprehension of limitless oneness. Thus it is clearly demonstrated that pilgrimage to this holy site is superior, and that this holy site signifies a representation of the Dharmakaya. I recorded this pilgrimage so as to add one more testimony witnessing the blessing power of this holy site so that more beings may share Buddha′s blessings upon seeing or hearing about it.

At the top level I asked disciple Ji Hu to recite Patriarch Chen′s Chinese work, ″Supplication to Bodhicitta Connecting Mind, Buddha and Sentient Beings.″ And then I practiced the Three-kaya Powa to build Dharma connections with deceased beings in Indonesia.

The next day we went on pilgrimage to a few local Buddhist monasteries. At the site of the ancient Candi Sari—said to be constructed for making offerings to Green Tara—we saw on its exterior walls carvings of assorted postures of Tara. Disciple Ji Hu took some photos, and then noticed that, even though it was sunny, in some photos taken there, there were many circles of light, and one of them shows light smokes forming a standing Tara. Thus it illustrates that our devotion in making this pilgrimage had inspired the blessing of Tara′s presence.

That evening we flew back to Kuala Lumpur to continue on our way to this year′s Dharma tour in Asia.
