Repentance in Oneness

Yutang Lin

In recent years all sorts of sentient beings on Earth are fully impacted by Covid-19 pandemic, global warming and irregular and drastic climate changes, and the consequential suffering and hardship due to loss of lives, limitation of activities, downfall of economic conditions, etc. From the Dharma point of view, all these are consequences of heavy and negative public karma as accumulated by sentient beings on Earth, and the way to redeem lies in practicing repentance according to Dharma teachings so as to hope for lessening of and turning toward improvement of consequences of public karma.

Practicing repentance in Dharma does not assume that the practitioner is pure, and the rest are sinful, and that the practitioner is granting help. Fundamentally, Dharma is based on the realization that there is originally no boundaries in direct experiences″, and hence ″all in Dharmadhatu are originally in indivisible oneness″ is comprehended. Therefore, all suffering and hardship in the world, whether they are awared of or not by a sentient being, are karmic consequences shared by each and every sentient being, while engaging in any Dharma practice, the resulting merits for reducing bad karma, cultivating good karma, and maturing wisdom, are shared naturally by each and every sentient being. Only with such comprehension, not confined by personal mental attitudes and views, can genuine and inconceivable effects come about.

For repentance, the simplest Dharma practice is ″repetition″ of a holy epithet or mantra. There is also ″repentance prostration″, namely, to recite and prostrate according to a repentance ritual (Ref.: Thirty-five Buddhas Repentance Ritual). In Tantric Dharma the main practice is the ″Vajrasattva Hundred-syllable Mantra Practice″ (Ref.: Hundred Syllable Mantra, III. C in The Foundational Practices of Vajrayana).
