Indulgence in Video Games

Yutang Lin

Some people indulge themselves in video games; to others around them, those games are merely illusive worlds born of a set of electronic devices and software, but to these people they are paradises leading them to almost unaware of all the rest. This kind of indulgence, in comparison, is still relatively easy to be waken up because the worlds in video games are still drastically different from the environments of our daily lives. Nevertheless, genuine awakening still depends on the players′ voluntary renunciation and practicing staying away.

Each person has a set of personal views and values, and lives by it. Even though this set subsists only in a person′s mind, but, since one is used to living by it, and hence it is very difficult to realize that, this set is held onto totally and only by one′s own intention but does not exist outside one′s mind. The ″delusion″ and ″awakening″, as mentioned in Dharma, basically point out that, the root of all worldly problems lies in each one indulging in personal views and values, without realizing that, this set of personal views and values has no corresponding reality in the totality of experiences, but merely a personal grasping.

Although indulgence in personal grasping is similar to indulgence in video games, nevertheless, this kind of inner master, already so familiar to the extent of a routine in life, is extremely difficult to realize its illusive nature, and even more difficult to stay away from its dominance. If one could comprehend the reasoning set forth above, and wishes to become awakened and staying away from such indulgence, then one needs to abide by Dharma in practice and in life, and then, after long-term endeavors, one will gradually attain post-awakening life.
