Key Points for Decision

Yutang Lin

Buddhists are many, but few of them are full-time Dharma practitioners. Of course, the reasons are because there are matters and considerations that cannot be let go, and the contents vary with each individual. In this short article I would like to point out the key points, that I think of, on which hinges one′s decision to renounce the worldly matters or not.

One point is to realize that, there is no end to dealing with worldly matters. If one′s intention is to help a bit, then, before this bit is settled, other bits will follow along the way. While one is hesitating, suddenly one′s life is mostly over, and one no longer has the energy to do serious Dharma practices. As one′s awareness of ″Impermanence″ not strong enough, one attends only to the caring for others, but ignores the fact that ″all matters are beyond one′s control″. In life, only what one is currently doing is real; as to matters left unattended, no one knows if it will come true or not.

One point is to realize that, remaining in worldly matters, busy with this or that, one cannot escape transmigration in the Six Realms; the only path that can transcend and escape from transmigration is to engage in Dharma practices based on genuine Bodhicitta. Worldly matters are all swirling around within the sphere of selfishness; only practicing Dharma, so as to eventually enable all sentient beings to attain full enlightenment, can hope for genuinely helping other sentient being to attain emancipation from Samsara. This point depends on whether one′s comprehension, realization and faith in Dharma is thorough enough or not, and on one′s recognition of the degree of importance to Dharma practices and worldly matters, as to which one is more important.

Which kind of path one will proceed on through life can only be decided by oneself; others can, at most, offer some advices. May the key points mentioned above enable people who set their minds on practicing Dharma to see clearer at the juncture of their decision making!
