Practitioners Way in Life

Yutang Lin

People in ordinary worldly ways could hardly comprehend the practices of Dharma practitioners, while Dharma practitioners, having renounced worldly engagements, have no way to meet the criticisms and demands of worldly ways; how should Dharma practitioners conduct themselves in life so that they are still adhering to the path of emancipation? This kind of problems, in the face of family relations, are especially confusing and compounding, and hence, it needs to be clarified in order to help novices.

The reason why we devote ourselves to Dharma practices is because we have already comprehended that Dharma can lead and guide all beings to gradually escape from illusions and delusions, recover our original purity and clarity, and attain ultimate liberation which is free from transmigration in the ocean of suffering of the six realms of Samsara, and abiding in the peace and harmony of all-in-oneness. Dedicating the merits, generated through Dharma practices, to all sentient beings, has real and ultimate benefits. Even though these comprehensions cannot be shared by all beings right away, in time, they will be gradually discovered and appreciated by other beings.

Facing worldly criticisms and demands, we could not respond in kind, but can only reply with humble and peaceful attitude, saying that we are sorry for our limited capacities that we cannot look after both sides, instead we can only dedicate the merits, accrued through ″practicing Dharma for all sentient beings″, to ″sooner attainment of full enlightenment of all beings″, as our repayment to others′ kindness; may we eventually obtain their forgiveness in the future!

As to the mental state of the practitioner, all worldly considerations should be let go completely because no one can satisfy the demands of others. If worldly considerations continue to linger in one′s mind, that amounts to being trapped in Samsara; when one cannot escape from Samsara, how then could one repay others′ kindness? Only through concentration on Dharma practices and activities can one sooner arrive at the realm of all attaining full enlightenment simultaneously.
