Accommodating

Yutang Lin

The ″Thirty-two Kinds of Responses″ of Bodhisattva Guan Yin is well-known to us Buddhists; to each of the thirty-two kinds of sentient beings He would appear as a sentient being most appropriate for the conversion of that kind of beings. All such various transformations, as skillful means of conversion, surely demonstrate the great wisdom, great compassion and great capabilities of the great Bodhisattva; however, fundamentally the underlying principle is to be accommodating to facilitate teaching and conversion.

Different sentient beings have individual degrees of various aptitudes and inclinations, not to mention that they each have individual habitual tendencies. To help each and every being comprehend Dharma teachings, and then proceed to putting Dharma into practices and adhering to the teachings in life, it is necessary to provide teachings suitable to each individual being so that desirable results will gradually take place. And the foundation for providing teachings and for conversion to take place is the opportunity to mingle together. Hence, Bodhisattva Guan Yin always begins with accommodating himself to the levels of the sentient beings.

For us, as Buddhists, we are supposed to practice ″no self and renouncing grasping″. It would be ideal to avoid attitudes that are ″demanding others″, and to adopt thinking ″in others′ shoes″, so that we may follow the way of accommodating in daily life. Such an approach will yield better results both in one′s Dharma practices and in propagation of Dharma to benefit others.
