Making Good Use of Habits Yutang Lin
The goal of practicing Dharma teachings is to purify and extinguish all habitual tendencies so as to enable one to return to original purity. However, living in the world, we all have certain routine activities, and hence, without being aware of it, each one of us has formed some habitual tendencies that are difficult to alter. Patriarch Chen taught that, best to have a regular daily Dharma practice session at a set time and place. As one adheres to this practice for some time, one would become ″addicted″ to it; and then daily at this set time one would feel like taking up this practice, and when one fails to comply to this habitual activity one would feel not at ease. Thus, we are making use of the force of habits to help a Dharma practitioner to engage in long-term and constant Dharma practices. This kind of habits in Dharma practices will not form ″karmic hindrances″ to one’s returning to original purity because the contents of Dharma practice sessions aim only at directing the practitioners to return to original purity. A Dharma practitioner had better have a regular daily life so as to help stable the progress on the enlightenment path, and to help prevent mistakenly veer into deviate routes. Daily regular sessions may also prevent regress due to laziness and distractions due to random activities. Only through incessantly repeating some set Dharma practices can one gradually comprehend the benefits of such Dharma practices and attain the widths and depths of progresses in enlightenment within such Dharma practices.
