Mind of Thorough Renunciation

Mind of Thorough Renunciation

Yutang Lin

To Dharma practitioners, ″Full Enlightenment″ is the ultimate goal, while ″Transcending Transmigration in Samsara″ is the basic attainment to render their lifelong endeavors worthwhile. In fact, even ″Transcending Transmigration″ is hardly attained by Buddhists in general; hence, some practice the Pureland path, with the hope that, through Buddha’s blessings they will eventually gain rebirth in Pureland, and thereby escape from falling into transmigration again.

In order to transcend Transmigration in Samsara, the most fundamental point is that, a practitioner needs to sustain ″Mind of Thorough Renunciation″; in other words, he no longer keeps personal caring for any things or matters in the Three Realms of Desires, Forms or Non-form, and he firmly recognizes that no worldly approaches can ultimately realize ″escaping from suffering and attaining happiness″ for sentient beings.

Only after having sustained ″Mind of Thorough Renunciation″ can a practitioner obtain clarity of mind, time and energy to devote himself fully into Dharma practices so that eventually he will be able to benefit all sentient beings in the ultimate fashion of helping them attain full enlightenment.

″Mind of Thorough Renunciation″ seems to be hardly within reach in daily life. However, when one eventually faces death, all things and matters will all of a sudden just vanish beyond one’s control; contemplated in this way one will realize that ″Mind of Thorough Renunciation″ is actually not unattainable. If a practitioner could practice in this way, then ″Living and Dying all the same″ could be realized.

For Dharma practitioners who have devoted themselves to the enlightenment path for long years, they would certainly hope to gain some attainment as fruits of their lifelong endeavors; hence, I indicated the essential point in this essay so that they might gain attainment sooner!
