Renunciation

Yutang Lin

Why do Dharma practices emphasize and encourage ″renunciation″?

Generally speaking, it is because worldly bondages and pollutions are too variegated; if a Dharma practitioner can stay away from such environments, then it would be more likely for devoted concentration in Dharma practices and services to build up.

Fundamentally speaking, it is because sentient beings are innate Buddhas with boundless and limitless nature; right now, they are under the bondage of all sorts of sufferings, mainly due to all sorts of mental grasping, developed by habitual tendencies, that induced sentient beings to live within all sorts of self-set limitations. Hence, the progress of Dharma practices may also be looked upon as a sequence of experiences of breaking through layers over layers of self-set limitations.

Thus, basically ″renunciation″ lies in breaking through ″self-set limitations.″ However, self-set limitations are difficult to discern by oneself; and even if some are noticed, often it is beyond one′s capacity to be free from their bondages. Hence, we need to rely on Dharma practices to gradually regain our original purity.

If one could thoroughly comprehend that one′s original nature is originally without any trace of hindrances, and hence sustain a mental state free from all preconceptions and intentions, then it is actually possible to renounce instantly all bondages and immediately merge into all-in-oneness.

Ordinarily it is difficult for one to achieve thorough ″renunciation″ instantaneously, and hence the teaching on repeating ″Amitabha″ to gain rebirth in Pureland is given, with the hope that the practitioners may thereby gradually regain their original purity. If one could instantaneously attain thorough ″renunciation,″ then it will amount to ″instant awakening.″
