Correct Way to Repent
Yutang Lin
A disciple told me that
When she practiced repentance in the past
She reflected into all minor offends she committed
Consequently she felt ill at ease and spirit down
Therefore she changed to reciting Sutras only
Practicing repentance like that
Emphasis was on finding one's faults
And thereby deepened self-entanglement
Mind could not be opened up
So it felt difficult to sustain the efforts
When changed to recitation of Sutras
It was approaching to original purity in our activities
So there were no undesirable side-effects
Any and all Dharma practices should not
Be separated from the Great Bodhicitta
Reflecting on one's misdeeds in repentance practices
Serves only as a leading trigger
To ignite comprehension of facts about all sentient beings
While submerged in delusions born of ignorance
They are all likely to commit the same folly and sins
Repenting on one personal matter
Should be universalized to include all beings of the same offense
Whether it had been committed, is being committed or will be committed
May all such sins and misdeeds be fully eradicated
Repenting in this way
Mind is boundless, and so sinful karmas can easily be cleansed
The more one practices thus, the more one feels
Purified, opened up and tranquilized
So it seems that, for novices who have not comprehended well
The theoretical aspects of Dharma practices
To engage in Dharma practices they indeed need
To rely on the guidance of an experienced master
Once the right views and correct paths are pointed out
Often they can reach attainment through less efforts
And avoid wasting energies on unnecessary digressions
