Selections from Ven. Da Yu's "Songs of Emancipation"

Edited by Upasaka Chou
Translated by Yutang Lin

Neither concerned with essence nor form,
Nor grasping to the notion of blank essence,
That is true essence of Tathagata.

Directly cut off the root and source and end all suffering at once.
Picking leaves and finding branches are people of gradual teaching.

Since the road to Nirvana has been traversed,
Thoroughly know that life and death are originally vacuous.

In dreams the Six Realms are vividly present;
After awakening all are vacuous, even saints and worldlings.

Unchanged yet following conditions, thus activities are without obstacles;
At ease and behaving as one feels like, therein is great peace and pleasure.

Immeasurable meanings of hundreds and thousands kinds of Samadhi,
All are only to be found in ordinary daily-life usages.

Without bondage and without escape, also without hindrance,
When deluded, it was self-hindered, and upon awakening, naturally dissolved.

What one hears is just wind in the sky;
How could it hinder the profound great Samadhi!

Not distinguishing enemy or friend by slander or praise,
Only then matches the equanimity of one's original mind.

Only after scars and dirt are all cleaned up will brightness appear;
Both mind and its objects have all become absent, only then the essence is genuine.
